The site is located in the administrative area of Poole, but within the boundaries of Bournemouth. Prior to the development of the new surgery, the site was occupied by a single building housing a good store and Pharmacy.
PWP architects were engaged by The Southern Co-operative to prepare a master-plan for the entire site to provide a smaller more 'convenient' Co-op store; a standalone unit for the pharmacy with enhanced facilities; a pair of independent retail units for rent by TSC; and a new purpose built Medical Centre for the existing Bearwood surgery.
The existing building was redeveloped to accommodate the commercial units, with the section along knights road being demolished to create a site for the new surgery building.
The design for the medical centre is centered around the patient experience.
The existing building failed to address Knights Road to the East and we believed there was an opportunity to create a new building on the existing site which had its own identity within the community, enhanced by orientating the main elevation towards Knights road.
The new surgery achieved a BREEAM Very Good rating through the use of passive ventilation, Low energy LED light fittings and Renewable Energy. The renewable technologies include photo-voltaic panels for electricity and an air source heat pump for heating and hot water.
