Corton Coastal Village

Corton Coastal Village

Location:  Lowestoft, Suffolk

Client:  Warner Hotels

RIBA Plan of Work stages:  3-7

Set on a Suffolk clifftop on the easternmost coast of the UK, Corton Coastal Village boasts vast ocean views with beach hut units arranged around central garden spaces.

Having originally developed the site since 1946, Warner Hotels gained planning permission in 2012 for a masterplan scheme to replace existing accommodation with newer units better suited to guest requirements.

Working on the basis of this permission, PWP Architects sought to continue the partially completed scheme, proposing the building out of several one- and two-storey holiday lodge suites in the style of beach huts with balconies and patio terraces. Planning permission was granted in 2014.

The proposed beach hut lodges were externally clad in weatherboarding cladding to match the existing pastel colours, with white embellishments and light grey felt-tile roofing. Remaining accommodation blocks were upgraded to match the existing offering at the north of the site.

Built off site as prefabricated units, the construction of the scheme was completed in 2015/16, and the lodges have proved to be immensely popular due to the quality of both their design and  seaside location near Lowestoft.
