Roussillon Park is a phased residential development on the site of the Chichester Barracks, originally established in 1795 as tented accommodation in response to the threat of the French Revolution.
PWP Architects, developing drawings completed by Ben Pentreath, delivered a phased programme of a diverse range of two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes, offering a large variety of properties to cater for all needs in the aim to create a community. All the homes meet the standards of Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 and incorporate passive design measures such as solar gain and natural ventilation to reduce energy use and resultant carbon emissions.
The architecture has been influenced greatly by the archetypal Chichester streetscape of formal three-storey classical townhouses and detached three-bay Georgian houses, drawing upon local materials of soft grey brick, flint, and slate and clay tile roofs in a restrained contemporary form. Great care has also been taken to protect and retain as much of the barracks’ original features, with the traditional street layout of the site linking seamlessly into the revised surroundings.
