South Street

Location:  Havant, Hampshire

Client:  Private Client

Other Constraints:  Conservation Area

RIBA Plan of Work stages: 0-7

This property in South Street is within close proximity to Havant town centre, within a built-up residential area, and was built in 1881 as one of a pair of Victorian workers cottages for the local landowner.

PWP Architects secured planning permission for a single-storey extension to infill the gap between the existing building and the garden wall. Although the site is situated within a conservation area, the proposed extension is to the rear of the property and only visible from the garden of the immediate neighbour.

The proposal has been designed to reduce the massing of the building in relation to the neighbours’ view to be as unobtrusive as possible, made feasible by using standing seam zinc roof cladding. This not only reduced the roof pitch to just 20° but creates a dichotomy between old and new. The extension is built in SIPS panels making construction quick and a large bi-fold door provides the client with a larger, lighter space.
