The site for this project is located within a dense urban area within Portsea, with differing styles, functions, and scales in the existing buildings that surround the site. The appearance and character of contemporary Portsea derives mainly from the legacy of its wartime experience; the area was heavily bombed during the infamous air raid of 12th August 1940, which marked a change in the building fabric.
Following continued consultation and design revision, PWP Architects secured planning for a new build, two- and three-storey student hall of residence accommodating 24 study bedrooms on a brownfield site.
The mass of the proposal is both reflective of existing built form and subservient to surrounding listed buildings, and the street elevation has been broken up using vertical elements and differing material treatments. Brick and render are supplemented by PPC aluminium elements and a standing seam metal roof.
In a further application, a single-storey refectory is proposed to link the new build to the existing student accommodation to the north-east, using existing openings into the central courtyard space.
